Confusing words. By or Until

Два слова by и until имеют одинаковые значения, но их нельзя подменять друг другом!

By - "к", не позднее определенного крайнего срока

На русский язык это предлог удобно переводить как «к» или заменять английским before.

Давайте разберем примеры:

I will be at home by 5pm. (I will arrive home before 5pm).

The lesson must be finished by 3pm as the classroom is needed then. (The lesson must finish before 3pm).

Everyone’s homework must be completed by Tuesday please.

I would like all the proposals on my desk by the end of the week.

Until - "пока", значит до определенного места или времени

Используйте until, чтобы показать длительность. На русском языке есть подходящее для него слово «пока».

I will be at home until 5pm. (I am at home just now but at 5 pm I will leave home).

The party continued until 3am. (The party finished at 3am).

Don’t get off the bus until you’ve reached the city center. (When you reach the city center get off the bus).

I can’t afford to eat out until I get paid at the end of the month.

I can’t wait until my studies are finished and I can travel the world.

Until we have all the information we can’t make a decision.

I need the documents by Thursday, I can’t wait until Friday as it’s too late.
